Patron holidays
As in most Catholic Mediterranean cultures, the Balearic Islands celebrate patronal festivals, honoring a town’s patron or patroness. These include celebratory expressions of popular culture - specific to each town - as well as verbenes, parties in which the villagers gather and dance to music until well into the night. verbenes (revetlles), festes on els vilatans es reuneixen amb música fins ben entrada la nit.
The Festes de Sant Pere, in Andratx, open the season on June 29. This patronal festival is followed by the Festes de la Verge del Carme – the patron saint of fishermen – on July 16th; the Sant Elm Moors and Christians in August; the Festes de la Verge del Carme of Sa Coma on August 15th; the Festes de Sant Agustí of S'Arracó on August 29th; and, finally, on September 8th, the Mare de Déu de la Trapa closes the festival season.
